Chavutti Thirumal

Literally meaning Massage by Foot Pressure, Chavutti Thirumal was developed in Kerala, southern India by the Kalari warriors.  Kalari, traditionally known as Kalarippayattu, dating back to 12th Century AD, is an ancient martial art form which brings together the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of life.

In peacetime the warriors practiced Katakali Dance, Yoga and Ayurveda and Chavutti Thirumal. The warriors used Chavutti Thirumal to maintain inner fluidity of the body and to increase flexibility and strength in the muscles, joints and ligaments.

Chavutti Thirumal is a full body oil massage, differing from most other types of massage in that the practitioner uses her feet for the main part of the treatment. The advantage of feet over hands is that with one deep, powerful stroke the whole length of the clients body can be massaged, from the tips of the fingers to the tips of the toes. The long flowing strokes literally ‘iron out’ knots and kinks in the muscular skeletal system whilst encouraging a mental state of deep relaxation.

By gently stretching and realigning the spine, these long graceful strokes help to create space between previously compacted vertebrae, leaving you feeling taller as well as invigorated and deeply relaxed.

What to expect from a treatment

The treatment begins after an initial consultation.

You are asked to take all your clothes off and a towel is provided in place of underwear. Women will be topless when they turn over for the second half of the treatment but the treatment can be altered to give extra privacy if they are worried about that.

The practitioner will use her hands to apply warm oil to your body. The massage is then carried out using one foot, whilst the other foot is firmly rooted in the ground and the practitioner’s balance is supported by a suspended rope.

The finishing touches are done with the hands.  The full treatment lasts 1 1/2 hours. Hour treatments are also available.

This treatment will leave you feeling blissfully relaxed yet energised and centred.

It has been described as “the Rolls Royce of massage” by Frank Loftus, the owner of The Rose & Crown Chiropractic Clinic in South Molton, Devon.

You will definitely feel the difference after your first treatment, although Chavutti Thirumal was traditionally practiced daily for ten days, however five consecutive treatments can provide the intensity and continuity necessary to transform the body on both an emotional and physical level.
